Italy is a southern European country that has had a tremendous influence on the culture and religion of the entire Mediterranean region and, by extension, much of the Western world. Rome, the "Eternal City," was the administrative and spiritual center of an empire that stretched across the entire known world; it later became the center of Christianity, the largest religion in the world. As might be expected given its important religious history, Italy is home to a vast array of sacred sites encompassing a variety of traditions, from ancient Roman temples and early Christian sites to medieval synagogues and magnificent Renaissance cathedrals. Below is an illustrated index of the sacred sites and religious places in Italy profiled so far on Sacred Destinations, listed in alphabetical order by name. Featured Sites in Italy San Ponziano Spoleto, Umbria This 12th-century church on the outskirts of town is dedicated to Spoleto's patron saint. It has a fine Romanesque facade and extensive medieval frescoes in the crypt. Spoleto Cathedral Spoleto, Umbria The lovely Duomo di Spoleto dates from the 12th century. It features a fine Romanesque facade, magnificent frescoes by Fra Filippo Lippi and others, and a handwritten letter from St. Francis of Assisi. Sant'Ambrogio Milan, Lombardy Noted for its architecture, this basilica was consecrated by St. Ambrose in 387 AD. It became the model for all Lombard Romanesque churches.
