Carolino Augusteum Museum, Salzburg
The Carolino Augusteum Museum (named after Empress Carolina Augusta) details Salzburg's cultural history through a variety of collections and exhibits. It includes the Volkskundemuseum, or Folklore Museum, which has some especially fascinating religious and cultural artifacts.
History
Founded in 1834 and destroyed by a 1944 bombing, the present museum building was reconstructed in 1966. The Folklore Museum is housed in a hunting lodge built by Archbishop Markus Sittikus in 1615, situated in the Hellbrunner Schlosspark (Hellbrun Castle Park).
What to See
The artifacts displayed in the Volkskundemuseum (Folklore Museum) illustrate the history of popular customs and religious beliefs in Austria. Among the highlights are the Perchten, stylized masks depicting Alpine demons worn at processions during the Carnival period; their traditional purpose was to ward off the approach of winter. There are also Hallstatt Age relics, ancient Roman ruins and mosaics from Salzburg, the famous Celtic bronze pitcher found on the Dürrnberg near Hallein, and an outstanding collection of old musical instruments.
The other sections of the Carolino Augusteum displays such items as Gothic panel paintings, Romantic-era paintings, and the original composition of "Silent Night," composed by Franz Gruber and Josef Mohr in nearby Oberndorf in 1818.
