The city of Yangon (formerly Rangoon) lies in a fertile area of southern Myanmar on the Yangon River.
Although the population of Yangon is close to 4 million, the city is so full of trees and shade that some neighbourhoods are practically jungle. At night, Yangon's wide boulevards come alive with hordes of stalls selling delicious food and piles of huge cigars.
For any visitor, not just those interested in temples, Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda is a must-see, and there are several other interesting temples and stupas to explore as well.

Kyaikto (Golden Rock)
A unique and popular shrine centered around a precariously-balanced rock on the edge of a cliff near Yangon. Devotees add squares of gold leaf to its surface as an act of merit. |

Shwedagon Pagoda
The holiest shrine in all of Myanmar, this spectacular pagoda crowns a hill above Yangon and sparkles with pure gold and diamonds. |
