Avebury

View of Avebury Henge

An overview from the footpath on the southeast bank at Avebury. From here we can see: (1) the outer circle of the southwest sector (far left, across the road); (2) the two giant portal stones (foreground) that marked an entrance to the sacred enclosure; (3) the Southern Inner Circle (right); (4) the base of the now-missing Ring Stone (far right). In the background is Avebury village, with the spires of the parish church visible on the left.

The two portal stones are 13 ft 7 in (4.1 m) and 14 ft 2 in (4.3 m) high, respectively. They have been numbered 1 and 98 by archaeologists. The Southern Circle originally had 29 stones, which were set up in a perfect circle with an average of 36 feet (11 m) between each one.
