Canterbury Cathedral: Fresco: Legend of St Eustace (c. 1475)

Fresco: Legend of St Eustace (c. 1475)

Detail of a fresco on the outer wall of the north aisle depicting the Legend of St Eustace, c. 1475. The legend tells of a Roman hunter named Eustace, who has an unusual vision of Christ crucified between the horns of a white stag (partially visible at bottom right). He is converted on the spot and eventually goes on to become a martyr. Here Eustace and his sons are about to reunite with his wife, who is arriving on a ship.
