The county of Cornwall occupies the southwestern peninsula of England and is one of the most popular counties among British holidaymakers and retirees.
Cornwall abounds in rugged cliffs, hidden bays, fishing villages, sandy beaches, and sheltered coves once frequented by smugglers. The Cornish language, of Celtic derivation and similar to Welsh, died out in 1750 but the unique Celtic culture in this corner of England lives on. Cornwall is home to a variety of sacred sites and religious places, including numerous prehistoric stone circles and barrows, early Celtic crosses, holy wells, a majestic pilgrimage church on St. Michael's Mount, and the castle of Tintagel, the legendary birthplace of King Arthur.

An ancient abbey on a rocky island, this is England's parallel to Mont-St-Michel across the channel. Both were founded after visions of St. Michael the Archangel and are only accessible on foot during low tide. |
