Charles and Sarah Wesley's hymn books, dating from 1756 and 1749 respectively. Museum of Methodism at Wesley's Chapel, London. The museum label reads: "Charles and Sarah Wesley (nee Gwynne) were married in 1742. Music and hymns played an important [role] in both of their lives as Methodists were taught to sing their faith and their theology through their hymns. Sally wholly supported Charles in his hymn writing and even before they were married she was the first subscriber to the 1747 edition of his two volume hymnbook. Charles' hymn-book dates from 1756 and Sarah's dates from 1749. Sarah's is inscribed 'April 8th 1749' which is the date that she and Charles were married."
