Aerial view of Stonehenge and nearby earth formations, courtesy of Google Earth. The famous stone circle of Stonehenge is only one part of a larger archaeological site that also includes various ditches, man-made hills and burial mounds.
This satellite photo shows: (1) Stonehenge in the middle (within a triangle of roads); (2) several small burial mounds above and below (seen better in the next photo); and (3) the "Cursus," an oblong shape that stretches horizontally across the top of the photo, cutting through a patch of trees on the left.
The Cursus was created at the same time as the first Stonehenge (c.3000 BC). Named for its resemblence to a Roman hippodrome (racetrack), its function is not known for certain. It may have been used for processions or as a barrier to separate Stonehenge and Robin Hood's Ball (2.5 miles north of Stonehenge).
This entire area has been designated a World Heritage Site called "Stonehenge and Associated Monuments" by UNESCO. It is coupled with the stone circle and associated monuments at Avebury.
