Autun Cathedral: Capital: Music

Capital: Music

This capital in the nave with handbells and three musicians might be interpreted in several ways. At Cluny Abbey, a similar image is part of a series depicting all eight notes of plainsong - there it represents the fourth tone, associated with sadness. At Chartres Cathedral, a similar sculpture represents music in general. Here at Autun Cathedral, it may mean either of those, or depict a music lesson.
