St. John Window: The Philosopher and the Gems
St. John Window: The Philosopher and the Gems

According to the Golden Legend, John saw a philosopher who had told his followers to sell all their goods, use the money to buy precious jems, then break them up in public to make a statement. John disapproved, miraculously made the gems whole again, and told them to give the money to the poor instead. Detail of the St. John Window in the south nave aisle, which illustrates the legend of St. John the Evangelist, a.k.a. St. John the Divine. It dates from the early 13th century.
