Conques Abbey

Detail of the Last Judgment Tympanum (1107-1125) over the west door. The last figures in a procession of saints and contemporary leaders on the left side of the tympanum, moving towards Christ in the center. The crowned figure at the far right of the photo is Emperor Charlemagne, followed by servants. The identity of the four haloed figures is not certain. The small woman at the far left could be a symbol of conversion, with her legs turned away from Christ but her head and open hand turned towards him. The next figure is a female martyr (symbolized by the palm). Perhaps she is St. Alberte, sister of St. Foy. The bearded figure holding a staff is probably St. James and the monk on the right is identified as St. Jerome by a banner above. These four were probably sculpted by a different artist than the rest of the tympanum, based on the elongation of the figures.
