The Église St-Polycarpe (St. Polycarp Church) appears suddenly between the buildings of the Croix Rousse neighborhood of Lyon.

St-Polycarpe was built as an abbey church for Oratorian monks in 1670. It was dedicated to St. Polycarp, an early Christian leader who knew the Apostle John and taught St. Ireneaus of Lyon.

The church's facade was added by Toussaint Loyer in 1756. In 1791, St. Polycarpe became a parish church. It was damaged during the French Revolution, and you still can see the cannonballs.

Getting There

St. Polycarpe is located near the Amphitheater of the Three Gauls in the Croix Rousse neighborhood, to the west of the Sâone River (see map below).

The nearest Metro station is Croix Paquet; from there, walk west along Rue Burdeau or Rue R. Leynaud.
