Moissac Abbey Cloister

VIII: Abbot Durand de Bredons (d.1071)

Central pillar in the east gallery (Pillar VIII), which directly faced the chapter house. The relief depicts Durand de Bredons (d.1071), the first Cluniac abbot of Moissac and also Bishop of Toulouse. He was declared a saint shortly after his death and is therefore shown with a halo. This and all the pillar reliefs were carved of marble slabs taken from ancient sarcophagi.
