Archbishops' Palace and Museums, Narbonne
The impressive Archbishops' Palace (Palais des Archevèques) at Narbonne, France, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, is now the home of two notable museums (Musées de Narbonne).
The Museum of Art occupies the first floor, refurbished during the 17th century for the Archbishops, and houses very rich collections. Included are paintings, aquarelles, and designs of the 17th- to 19th-century French school and 15th to 18th century Italian schools, Flemish, German, Spanish and Dutch schools. There is also an important collection of faiences and ceramics.
The Archeological Museum is located in the Palais Vieux (Old Palace), the rooms of which date from the Middle Ages. The collections consist of objects found during the excavations of various sites in Aude, ranging from prehistoric to the Middle Ages. The Antiquity section is particularly well-represented.
