Richelieu Wing and Louis XIV
Richelieu Wing and Louis XIV

The Richelieu Wing on the north side of the Louvre, with equestrian statue of Louis XIV in the foreground. The original statue was sculpted of marble by Bernini (1673); this is a lead copy made in the 20th century. The Louvre Palace was originally constructed in the 12th century, but most of the present building dates from the 16th-century renovations of King Francois I and Henry IV. The modern glass pyramid (1989) was designed by architect I.M. Pei.
