Double-Sided Mithraic Relief

Double-sided marble relief depicting the god Mithras. From Rome, 2nd-3rd century AD. Mithras is a Persian god introduced to Rome as a mystery religion in the second half of the 1st century AD. The religion was especially popular with soldiers and involved multiple levels of initiation. This side shows Mithras banqueting with the sun; the other shows him slaying the bull.
