Columns on the north side of the nave, looking west, Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand, Poitiers. The nave pillars and clerestory date from the 11th century, but a fire around 1100 destroyed the original wooden roof. This led naturally to a decision to replace it with a stone vault, but the nave was too wide to support it. The solution? Add an extra row of columns on each side of the nave pillars, resulting in a narrower nave - and a forest-like effect of narrow aisles.
