The Birth of Mithras (3rd C)

Altarpiece depicting the birth of Mithras, the Persian god adopted by the Romans. The mithraic religion was an oriental mystery cult that including hope of a blissful afterlife. The altar dates from the 3rd century AD. Inv. 69, 73.
