Lucius Publicius, from Teretina in Italy, served 20-25 years with the Fifth Legion of the Roman Army. Upon his retirement from service, he would have received the equivalent of 13 years' salary to buy a farm or set up a business, and may also have paid for this funeral monument. His monument depicts him not as a soldier but as a Roman citizen, surrounded by his family.
