Sacred Destinations

An illustrated guide to sacred sites, pilgrimages, sacred art & architecture, historic religious places & more.

Photo Gallery: St. Cecilia, Cologne

Romanesque (c.1160) tympanum relief over the north door. In the center, St. Cecelia receives a martyr's crown (now lost) from an angel, while her fiance Valerianus and his brother Tiburtius look on. The inscription says that all believers who pass through the door can expect heavenly rewards if they follow the virtuous example of the saints.
