The Lutherhaus (Luther House) in Eisenach is where Martin Luther lived as a schoolboy with the Cotta family from 1498 to 1501.
The present building is a half-timbered structure dating mainly from the 16th and 18th centuries, but it encloses the original home of the Cottas and preserves the two rooms used by Luther.
The Lutherhaus includes a museum with displays on Luther's two periods in Eisenach (the second at Wartburg Castle) and a collection of Reformation books and archives.
A few minutes' walk south is the Bachhaus, a large Baroque house in which J.S. Bach was born. It includes a museum on his career and a collection of historical musical instruments.
