Sacred Destinations
A richly illustrated guide to the world's sacred places,
historic religious sites, sacred art and religious architecture.

Eisleben, Germany

Door of Kloster Helfta in Eisleben. Fully titled St Marien zu Helfta (St Mary's of Helfta), this 13th century Cistercian convent was once known as "the crown of German convents." Monastic life at Helfta ended with the Reformation, but in 1999 eight sisters from a Bavarian Cistercian abbey refounded the convent. Today, 18 sisters live here full-time and the convent hosts seminars and short retreats. Photo: Stephan Komp.
