Cathedrals, Churches, Monasteries of Erfurt
If churches and monasteries are your thing, Erfurt is your city! It boasts 36 churches and 15 monasteries and other ecclesiastical buildings.
Domplatz (Cathedral Square) has 70 outdoor steps leading from the up the hill to Erfurt's twin churches:
- St. Mary's Cathedral (Mariensdom)
This Roman Catholic cathedral, built in the 14th century, is the site of Martin Luther's ordinartion as a priest on April 3, 1507. - St. Severus Church (Severikirche)
St. Severus is a Catholic Parish Church, built in the 13th century.
Augustinerkloster (Augustinian Monastery)
1277, Gothic. Features Luther exhibition (lived here 1505-11) and crater where residents huddled in the basement trying to escape bomb raids during WWII, but the medieval columns collapsed and crushed them.
Prediger Monastery
This monastery is thought to be only remaining site associated with Master Eckhart (Dominican theologian, philosopher and mystic).
Kaufmannskirche (Merchant's Church)
Bach's parents were married in the Merchant's Church. The Luther Monument is on the south side of the church.
Barfüßerkirche (Blackfriar’s Church)
The "church of the barefooted" Blackfriars is one of the greatest examples of German ecclesiastical architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries. Now a medieval museum, the church contains Erfurt’s oldest surviving stained glass windows.
Michaeliskirche (Michael's Church)
This Protestant church was built in 1183 and served as the official church of Erfurt University.
Ägidienkirche
Built in the early 14th century, this church claims to be the oldest Methodist church in the world. For a small fee, you can climb a wooden staircase to the church's tower and enjoy an aerial view of the city. At the entrance of the Krämerbrücke by Wenigeplatz.
