Restaurant Review: Kartoffel Kiste, Trier

Date reviewed: December 2006.

Kartoffel Kiste is a non-touristy restaurant in Trier, Germany, whose menu consists almost entirely of potato dishes! It has an authentic atmosphere and delicious German food, and we recommend it for a warm, filling dinner.

The meals at Kartoffel Kiste are based firmly in the meat, cheese and potato tradition that makes German food so wonderful, but also so very heavy and filling. This was perfect for us, since we were crazy enough to visit Trier in the middle of winter and were very cold by the time we had decided on a restaurant. The main dishes may not be as appealing if you happen to be there on a hot afternoon, but they do have salads.

The menus are in German only and our waitress spoke almost no English, but this was a positive thing in our book. It added to the very un-touristy atmosphere of the restaurant as a whole, and made ordering something of an adventure since we don't have very much German yet (working on it).

The service was fine by continental European standards. Prices were moderate, with a side salad costing 3.50 €, a vegetarian potato dish at about 8 € and a meaty one at 12 €, steaks at 13-15 €, and dessert around 5 €.

I ordered from the section on the menu with the most delightful title: Kartoffeläuflaufe. This basically means "potato souflées" and is wonderfully pronounced "kart-offel-a-flow-feh." I chose the Kartoffeläuflaufe mit dreierlei Käse (potato souflee with three cheeses), which was smooth, buttery mashed potatoes loaded with cheese and cream. It was delicious but as you might imagine, a little on the rich side! I enjoyed it but could not finish it (somewhat unusual for me!) and felt very, very sleepy afterwards.

My husband ordered a schnitzel on top of a bed of baked cheesy potatoes, which he declared "maybe the best thing I have ever eaten." Between the two types of potato dish, be both thought his was the better choice because it wasn't quite so rich and had more variation in flavors.
