Agios Nikólaos Ragavás Church, Athens

Agios Nikólaos Ragavás, located in Pláka near the cathedral of Athens, is an 11th century church that is still in active use.

Agios Nikólaos Ragavás was built in the 11th century, rebuilt in the 18th century, and restored in the 1970s. Like many churches of Athens, it incorporates marble columns and other remains of ancient buildings in its external walls.

Agios Nikólaos Ragavás was the first church in Athens to have a bell after the War of Independence (1821), and the first to ring out after the city's liberation from the Germans on October 12, 1944.

Today, the Agios Nikólaos Ragavás is one of the favorite parish churches of Pláka, frequently used for colorful Greek weddings that spill out on the street on weekends.
