Crete
Crete is a large Greek island in the Mediterranean Sea with many attractions for travelers interested in religious sights. Crete boasts at least 4,000 years of continuous inhabitation, during which it has hosted the ancient and powerful Minoan civilization, centuries of Orthodox Christianity (beginning with St. Titus in New Testament times) and almost 700 years of Venetian and Turkish rule. Each culture and religious tradition has left its distinctive imprint on this fascinating island. Gortyna
This archaeological site is best known for the Gortyn Code, a stone-inscribed law code from 500 BC. Also here are the ruins of several Roman temples and the 6th-century Basilica of St. Titus.
Knossos One of the great archaeological sites of the world, the Palace of Knossos was built between 2000 and 1250 BC. It was a political and religious center of the ancient Minoan culture. |
