Photo: Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem

The Dome of the Rock glistens spectacularly in comparatively drab surroundings, high on the Temple Mount in the Old City. This prominence is exactly what the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik had in mind when he built it. He hoped the Dome of the Rock would instill a sense of pride in newly-arrived Muslims and make a powerful statement to both Jews and Christians that Islam was here to stay. This it does, even 1300 years later. Photo © Torie Partridge.
