Detail of a mosaic in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, dating from c.430 AD. It shows an open cabinet with four books inside, labeled with the names of the Four Evangelists. The books are clearly the Four Gospels of the New Testament, and this is an important early depiction of them as a canonical set. On the right is the fiery iron grate on which St. Lawrence (who is shown further to the right) was martyred.
