Sarcophagus of Constantius III: Front Panel

Detail of the so-called Sarcophagus of Constantius III in the left niche of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. For stylistic reasons, this sarcophagus has been dated to the late 5th century. The front panel bears a relief of a lamb standing upon a rock that is gushing streams of water, representing the Four Rivers of Paradise. The lamb has a halo with the Christogram (Chi Rho), so clearly represents Christ, the Lamb of God. On either side are two lambs without haloes, probably representing the apostles, and two palm trees, representing victory. The lid has Christograms at the corners.
