Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna

Justinian or Theodoric
Justinian or Theodoric

Sixth-century mosaic fragment in Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna, depicting either the Byzantine emperor Justinian or the barbarian king Theodoric. The inscription was added around the 16th century, and many scholars think the mosaic originally depicted Theodoric since the portrait differs a great deal from that in San Vitale.
