Detail of the southwest side. Construction on the Colosseum began under Emperor Vespasian and was completed under his son Titus in 80 AD. The exterior of the Roman Colosseum is made of travertine, stretching 527 m in perimeter and standing four stories high. The arches of the second and third stories were originally filled with statues. Although there is little evidence of it, the belief that Christians were martyred here has been popular since ancient times. Pope Gregory the Great (590-604) was asked by the Byzantine emperor for some Roman relics: among the gifts was a bag of sand from the Colosseum floor. Early Christian tombs have also been found in the ruins of the Colosseum.
