Fresco: Legend of St. Alexis (11C)
11th-century fresco on the left (south) side of the nave of the lower church, depicting the legend of St. Alexis. The story goes that the saint returned from Syria to his family home, where he lived under a staircase and worked unrecognized as a servant for 17 years. Upon his death, he was recognized and mourned by his family. Above this scene is the surviving lower half of a fresco of Christ with Saints Michael and Clement (left), Gabriel and Nicholas (right).
