Fresco: Pope Leo IV and Apostles
Detail of a 9th-century fresco of the Ascension of Christ on the east wall of the nave of the lower church. The Virgin Mary stands in the center, with the apostles to either side. On the far left is Pope Leo IV (847-855), with a square halo indicating he was still alive at the time of the fresco. On the far right is St. Vitus.
