Cypress Door (c.430 AD): Acclamation and Elijah

Left panel: a scene of uncertain meaning, involving acclamation of a man in official garb. Right panel: The Exodus, from bottom to top: Aaron with serpents (Exodus 7:8-12); Pharaoh's army drowns (Exodus 14:23-28); the Israelites escape, accompanied by God as the pillar of fire (Ex 14:19-20).

Detail of the 5th-century wood door in the narthex. A rare and precious survival, it includes 18 panels of narrative reliefs, most of them biblical scenes. For more details see our Illustrated Guide to the Ancient Door of Santa Sabina.
