Cypress Door (c.430 AD): Triumph of Christ and the Church
Cypress Door (c.430 AD): Triumph of Christ and the Church

An intriguing scene of uncertain meaning with fascinating symbols. At the top is Christ in a circle, surrounded by the Four Evangelists. Below are two male figures flanking a female figure and holding a circle with a line through it (perhaps a haloed cross descending from Heaven, with cosmic symbols above. Possible interpretations include the Triumph of Christ and the Church or the Second Coming.

Detail of early-5th-century wood door in the narthex. A rare survival of Early Christian art, it includes 18 panels of narrative reliefs, most of them biblical scenes. For more details see our Illustrated Guide to the Ancient Door of Santa Sabina.
