Bernward's Door

Detail of Bernward's Door (Bernwardstüren) in Hildesheim Cathedral. From top to bottom: expulsion of Adam and Eve; labors of Adam and Eve; offerings of Cain and Abel; and the murder of Abel. The door was made for St. Michael's Church in Hildesheim by Abbot Bernward in c.1015. It depicts eight scenes from the Old Testament on the left (from top to bottom) and eight scenes from the New Testament on the right (from bottom to top).
