View into the left transept. The central altar is dedicated to St. Joseph, Mary's husband. It was consecrated by Pope John XXIII on March 19, 1963. An ancient porphyry sarcophagus on the altar, taken from the Mausoleum of Santa Costanza in 1606, contains the relics of the apostles Simon and Jude.
