Sacred Destinations
An illustrated guide to the world's sacred sites, religious architecture and historic holy places.

St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City

The body of Pope John XXIII (d. 1963) displayed in a glass case beneath the Altar of St. Jerome, on the west side of the Pier of St. Longinus in the right aisle. The pope was beatified (a step towards sainthood) in 2000. When the tomb was opened in order to move his body to the basilica in 2001, it was found to be incorrupt and was therefore placed in a glass case.
