The "Four Tetrarchs" - a porphyry carving on an outside corner of St. Mark's Basilica (on the Doge's Palace side). They were created from 4th-century Egypt and are traditionally held to depict four Roman emperors (Diocletian, Maximian, Valerian and Constantius), but the real identiy of the figures remains a mystery. Another theory is that they are Saracens who, scheming to make off with treasure, poisoned each other and ended up as stone.
