Kamakura Transportation: Getting There & Around
To get to Kamakura, take the JR Yokosuka Line in the direction of Zushi, Kurihama, or Yokosuka. Trains departs every 10 to 15 minutes from the Yokohama, Shinagawa, Shimbashi, and Tokyo JR stations. The trip takes just under an hour from Tokyo Station and costs ¥890 one way.
Kamakura's major sights are clustered in two areas:
- Kamakura Station - tourist office, souvenir shops spread along Komachi Dori and Wakamiya Oji, restaurants, and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine;
- Hase - Great Buddha and Hase Kannon Temple
Transportation between Kamakura Station and Hase Station is via the Enoden Line, a streetcar-like small train, or takes about 15 mintues to walk. Destinations in Kamakura are also easily reached by buses that depart from Kamakura Station.
The tourist information window (tel. 0467/22-3350; open daily 9am-5:30pm) is immediately to the right outside Kamakura Station's east exit. It provides a free map in English and Japanese and sells a color brochure with a map for ¥200.
