Great Mosque of Baalbeck
The Great Mosque of Baalbeck stands in front of the entrance to the acropolis with the famous Roman temples of Baalbeck.
Built on the site of the Roman forum and later a Byzantine church dedicated to St. John, the Great Mosque of Baalbeck was built in the 7th and 8th centuries under the Omayyads. It re-used granite and limestone columns from the earlier structures.
Today, what remains of the mosque is the eastern courtyard, an arcade that was the entrance to the mosque, and a single square minaret in the north-west corner of the courtyard.
