The Mormon Temple of Mexico City (officially named the Mexico City Mexico Temple) was dedicated in 1983. The 26th Mormon temple, it is the largest ouside the United States and is designed in the style of an ancient Mayan temple.

Mormons (members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) believe that after Christ rose from the dead in Jerusalem, he appeared to the ancient inhabitants of the Americas, including the Mayans.

History

Construction on the Mexico City Mexico Temple began on November 25, 1979. After completion, a public open house was held from November 9-19, 1983, to allow non-Mormons to tour the temple. The temple was dedicated on December 2, 1983, by Gordon B. Hinckley, becoming the 26th operating Mormon temple in the world.

What to See

The Mexico City Mormon Temple stands on 7-acre grounds in the northeast area of Mexico City near the airport. It is made of white cast stone and designed after ancient Mayan temple architecture.

Inside are four ordinance rooms and 11 sealing rooms, covering a total area of 116,642 square feet. It is the largest LDS temple outside the United States.

An onsite visitors' center is open to the public and provides information on how "Jesus Christ visited the ancient inhabitants of the Americas after His Resurrection."
