Iglesia de Santo Domingo, Puebla

The Iglesia de Santo Domingo, on the corner of Cinco de Mayo and 4 Poniente, was originally part of a Dominican monastery completed in 1611. Lining the walls of the nave are some exquisite Baroque altars, and the church has a fine onyx pulpit.

Santo Domingo's main attraction, however, is the Capilla del Rosario built in 1690 in honor of the Virgin of the Rosary. One of the most elaborately decorated chapels in Mexico, it is a Baroque masterpiece in gold leaf and plaster. Along the walls, grotesque heads spew golden vines whose tendrils twist and twine to form the frames of six paintings depicting the mysteries of the rosary.

The dome just as ornate and depicts saints, cherubs, dancing angels, and a heavenly choir.
