A Taste of North Africa: Flying to Morocco

Morocco lies on the northwest tip of Africa and has a wide variety of terrain throughout – including the Atlas Mountains in the centre of the country and the Sahara Desert that borders much of the south of the country. Morocco enjoys a Mediterranean climate throughout the year, with the months from June to November enjoying the warmest weather.

This guide, bought to you by Travelsupermarket.com, aims to teach you a little more about this picturesque country, and hopefully get you even more excited about your trip!

Morocco has a number of major cities, including the capital Rabat and the cities of Tangier, Marrakech and Casablanca, many of which have historical mosques, courtyards and palaces to explore. If you’re looking to fly to Morocco from the UK, most flights are available to these cities, which is where you can find many of the main tourist attractions.

Rabat

Rabat is the capital of Morocco and is home to the Royal Palace and the picturesque Kasbah of the Udayas. The city has a rich mix of modern and historical, with museums and galleries interspersed with historical attractions such as the Hassan Tower - a large sandstone minaret and a number of mosques and mausoleums, as well as the ancient Roman ruins at Chellah.

Casablanca

Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco and the largest port in Africa, and the city’s name is also synonymous with Hollywood cinema. There are a wide variety of hotels to be found within Casablanca, with a variety of architecture to be found around the city, making the city a popular destination for short breaks in North Africa. The city is home to the Hassan II Mosque and the Parc de la Ligue Arabe, one of the largest parks in the city.

Marrakech

Marrakech is a historic walled city known as the Red City and lies in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. The city is home to a number of magnificent courtyards and gardens, as well as the largest market place in Morocco – Djemaa el Fna – which is bordered by restaurants, with a wide variety of entertainment in the centre of the square, including dancers, acrobats, musicians and story-tellers.

Tangier

The city of Tangier lies along the northern coastline of Morocco, close to the entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar. Tangier has a rich history which can be seen throughout the city, with a number of modern developments helping to increase tourism in the area.

If you are considering holidaying in Morocco there are a wide variety of activities to participate in – from hot air balloon rides and quad biking in the Sahara to tours around historic cities such as Marrakech. Comparison services such as Travelsupermarket can be a useful resource when searching for the best deal on flights and hotels in Morocco.

When booking your holiday package, Bob Atkinson, travel expert at Travelsupermarket advises: "It's advisable to book your travel through a company registered with the Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (ATOL) scheme. This cover means that if your tour operator goes under, the Civil Aviation Authority will step in. If the company collapses part-way through your holiday the protection this gives you means you'll be able to continue your trip."
