The Russian Federation, better known simply as Russia, is a country that stretches over a vast expanse of Europe and Asia. It is the largest country in the world, covering almost twice the territory of the Canada.

Russia is the home of the Russian Orthodox Church, a branch of Eastern Orthodox Christianity that was adopted for Russia by Prince Vladimir in 988 AD. As the official church of the state for centuries, Russian Orthodoxy has produced a vast number of spectacular cathedrals, churches, and monasteries in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and cities across Russia. Most sacred places were closed or strictly regulated during the communist era, but are once again open and used for worship.

In addition to its Orthodox majority, Russia is also home to Buddhism (especially in Siberia), Islam and Judaism, making for a varied and rich array of sacred sites that stretch across the vastness of this unique land.
