The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church), also known as the Mormon Church, was founded by the American prophet Joseph Smith in 1830. Regular worship services take place in churches or chapels, and visitors are welcome to attend.
Mormon temples, on the other hand, are sacred places for secret rituals such as baptism for the dead and eternal marriage, and are open only to faithful Mormons who have obtained a "temple recommend." LDS temples are often monumental in scale and designed in a locally adaptive styles. As of 2006, there were 123 operating Mormon temples around the world. Below are those profiled on Sacred Destinations so far.
