Cárcel de la Inquisición (Inquisition Jail), Madrid

Unmarked by any historical plaque, the Cárcel de la Inquisición (Inquisition Jail) is where many Jews, Moors, and others designated heathens or heretics suffered under the Inquisitors. The prison later became the Cárcel de la Corona (Crown Prison), for holding wayward soldiers, priests, and nuns.

The former jail is now a large tapas bar, the Taberna de Lavapiés, named for the old Jewish Quarter. Ask a bartender if you can see the original, two-story medieval patio out back.
