Switzerland is a country of over 7 million people in Central Europe. Known worldwide for its thriving banking industry, military neutrality, quaint old towns, breathtaking Alpine scenery, mouthwatering chocolate, and precision in everything from watchmaking to train arrivals, Switzerland is also home to a variety of religious sights.
The Swiss Reformation in the 16th century, led by John Calvin from his pulpit in Geneva and Ulrich Zwingli in Zürich, contributed to a number of wars between rival cantons (Swiss city-states). When it was all over, Switzerland (like Germany) was about half Catholic and half Protestant.
Switzerland remains equally divided today, but peacefully so. Thus a modern visitor to this spectacularly scenic country can experience important Catholic shrines, soaring medieval cathedrals and remote abbeys as well as important Protestant historical sites. Synogogues can be found in most every Swiss city, and larger cities such as Geneva also have sacred sites of other faiths, such as mosques and Buddhist centers.
