St. Gallen
St. Gallen is a city of about 75,000 in the Alpine foothills of northeastern Switzerland, on a main train line 53 miles east of Zürich.
Situated in a valley at 2,200 feet above sea level, St. Gallen makes an excellent base for exploring Lake Constance (15-minutes' drive), Mount Säntis, and the Appenzell countryside.
This ancient town in the foothills of the Alps was founded by Gallus, an Irish monk who built a hermitage here in 612. By the 13th century his humble cell had developed into an important cultural outpost. Today, St. Gallen is the capital of a canton of the same name. It is known to some as the embroidery and lace capital of Europe, but the main attraction of St. Gallen is the Convent of St. Gall, a baroque Benedictine complex with a rich history and an even richer library, which has been designated a World Heritage Site.
