The land of the ancient Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans, Tunisia is a north African country with an astounding amount of history packed between its relatively small borders. As Lonely Planet puts it, "Tunisia's list of attractions would do justice to a country twice its size."

Many of Tunisia's fascinating attractions are religious sites or places of religious significance. There are ruins of ancient Roman temples, cities where early Christian teachers wrote and church councils assembled, countless beautiful mosques, and the holiest Muslim shrine outside Saudi Arabia and Jerusalem.
